Law & Legislation

Do you want to know exactly which rules you must take into account, or which legal amendments and new rules are important to the issue of food waste? The Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (Netherlands Enterprise Agency) will be happy to help.

No one likes to throw away food, but consumers need to be sure that their food is not harmful to their health. Companies that manufacture food products must comply with the food safety regulations outlined in the Dutch Commodities Act (Warenwet). Besides food, the Act covers all consumer goods.

The Wet onafhankelijke risicobeoordeling Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (Dutch) (Act for independent risk assessment by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) regulates the responsibility of the NVWA regarding risk assessment and health protection of the consumer.

Substances may accidentally end up in food products, which don’t belong there. This can bring risks to the safety and health of consumers. A company has a duty to report: meldingsplicht (Dutch). The producer needs to inform the Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (Dutch) (NVWA: Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority). A good system of traceability can withdraw these products quickly and accurately from the market.
