Utrecht’s first packaging-free food supermarket Bag & Buy opened its doors on Friday. The store is located on Twijnstraat.

The store offers a variety of products, such as nuts, dried fruit, granola, seeds, oil, vinegar and wine in dispensers, containers, jars and barrels. Customers have the luxury of buying exactly what they need by dispensing the product into a bottle or jar that they bought once off from the store or brought from home.

Bag & Buy thereby hopes to save on packaging materials and prevent food waste. The store was largely funded through crowdfunding, raising more than 75 thousand euros, according to NU.

Similar stores are already open in Groningen and Amsterdam.
